Evening Tri R3
Race report
F3 evening triathlon Wednesday 30th July 2008
Dorney Lake, Windsor
Distances: 750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run
The 3rd evening sprint triathlon at Dorney lake, Windsor saw record numbers of competitors tempted out to race by the sunny weather and the fast, traffic free race course.
With the sun still shining strongly over 250 racers took to the start a little after 7pm tackling the 750m swim in the lake that will host the 2012 Olympic rowing regatta.
Exactly 8 minutes and 40 seconds after the hooter sounded Joel Winter leapt out of the lake ahead of all the other competitors. Just 1 minute behind Joel the first ‘lady’ – 12 year old Sky Draper was out well within the top 10 overall, impressive swimming from the youngest competitor.
Whilst the athletes tackled the 20km multi-lap bike course the many spectators found great vantage points on the grassy banks around transition from which to watch the action and enjoy the late evening sun.
With such a fast course and it being a short sprint race once the first competitors were in off the bike they were soon streaming out onto the run. Running strongly at the front of the men’s field were Mark Robertson, Nick Clements and Steve Osborne and at the final turnaround there was very little separating them. At the finish line Robertson found just enough pace to out sprint Clements to take victory in 58min 53sec with Osborne taking 3rd place just 7 seconds back.
In the ladies event the remarkable junior Sky Draper continued to lead on the bike and run taking overall victory in 1 hour 7 minutes and 19 seconds – over 2 minutes ahead of second placed woman Kirsty Bamber! 17 seconds behind Bamber in 1hr 10min exactly was Beverly Childs, taking not only the final podium slot but also the lady vets title.
A big thanks goes out from the organisers to SBR, Cliff Bar, Red Bull, For Goodness Shakes and votwo for their sponsorship and assistance in putting the race on.
The next evening Tri at Dorney is on Wednesday 27th August. If it’s as popular as this one then get an entry in soon to avoid disappointment!
